Custom web design is the up-front design work — research, wireframes, visual direction, and high-fidelity mockups — that defines how your website will look and feel before a single line of production code is written. Why hand-coded
Most agencies stop at the design and hand it off to a builder — Wix, Webflow, Elementor — for someone else to assemble. We hand-code every site we design, in HTML, CSS, and TypeScript. The reason is mathematical: builder platforms ship 200–800 KB of generic CSS and JavaScript on every page. Hand-coded sites typically ship under 200 KB. That gap shows up in your Core Web Vitals score, your Google ranking, and the bounce rate on slow connections in rural Alberta.
Process
- Discover. Two to four hours of structured questions covering your brand, audience, competition, and what's actually broken about your current site.
- Design. Wireframes first, then visual direction (typography, color, mood). Mockups land within two weeks.
- Iterate. Two structured rounds of revision. We don't bill for these. We do bill for scope changes.
- Build. Hand-coded from scratch in TypeScript and React. Performance budgets enforced from day one.
- Launch. Deployment, DNS cutover, performance verification, and a 14-day stabilization window.

What's the difference between custom web design and a template?
A template is a pre-built website layout that you customize with your content. Custom web design starts from your brand and your customers' actual needs and produces a site shaped around those — not the constraints of someone else's grid. Templates are faster and cheaper. Custom is better for differentiation, performance, and long-term ownership.
How long does custom web design take?
Discovery and design typically takes 2–4 weeks for a focused project (5–10 pages) and 4–8 weeks for a larger build. Development happens in parallel with later design rounds. Total time from kickoff to launch is usually 6–12 weeks.
Do you design in Figma?
Yes. All visual design work happens in Figma. You get edit access to the file from day one, so there's no black box.
Can you redesign my existing site?
Yes — most of our work is redesigns rather than first-time builds. We'll audit what's working, what isn't, and what needs to change. Redesigns often start with a clear migration plan so you don't lose existing SEO equity.
